Everything on this page is read directly from the configuration and prompt text that the AI uses when assessing an Edexcel International GCSE English Language A (4EA1) essay. This is not a simplified summary or marketing copy — it is the actual production system, rendered for inspection. Edexcel publishes its mark schemes publicly, so full transparency is appropriate.
Exam Overview
Edexcel International GCSE English Language A (4EA1) is a qualification offered by Pearson Edexcel, taken by students worldwide. The writing components are assessed using two Assessment Objectives: AO4 (Communication and Purpose) and AO5 (Accuracy and Range). EssayHero assesses the writing sections of both papers.
Component 1 Section B. Non-fiction and transactional writing such as articles, letters, speeches, reports, reviews, and guides. Assesses the ability to inform, explain, describe, argue, persuade, or advise.
45 marks totalComponent 2/3 Section B. Creative and descriptive writing including narrative and descriptive pieces. Assesses the ability to engage the reader through creative expression.
45 marks totalPaper 1 — Assessment Criteria
Paper 1 writing is assessed against two Assessment Objectives, scored independently. The total score ranges from 0 to 45.
Communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapt form, tone and register for different purposes and audiences, organise information clearly and coherently
0–27 marksWrite clearly using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar
0–18 marksTotal: 0–45 (AO4 + AO5)
Paper 2 — Assessment Criteria
Paper 2 uses the same Assessment Objectives as Paper 1 but applied to imaginative writing. The focus shifts from transactional purpose to creative expression and reader engagement. The total score ranges from 0 to 45.
Communicate effectively and imaginatively, engage the reader, create atmosphere and characterisation, organise ideas for effect
0–27 marksWrite clearly using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar
0–18 marksTotal: 0–45 (AO4 + AO5)
Note on Paper Differences
Both papers use the same AO4 and AO5 assessment objectives with the same level descriptors. The key difference is in what is being assessed: Paper 1 focuses on transactional writing (purpose, audience, form), while Paper 2 focuses on imaginative writing (atmosphere, characterisation, creative engagement). The AI prompt is tailored accordingly.
Level Descriptors
These are the official Edexcel IGCSE level descriptors the AI uses to place each Assessment Objective within the mark range. They define what constitutes Level 5 (Convincing) through Level 1 (Limited) for each criterion. The same descriptors apply to both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Communication is perceptive and subtle. Task is sharply focused on purpose and the expectations/requirements of the intended reader. Sophisticated use of form, tone and register is evident. Extensive vocabulary is used with subtlety. Writing is compelling; it is highly effective for purpose, engaging for the reader and cogent. Skilful textual organisation and development creates cohesion.
Communicates successfully throughout. Secure realisation of purpose for the reader. Effective use of form, tone and register. Wide, selective vocabulary enhances communication. Writing is coherent and fluent and has assured structure. Textual organisation and development contributes to coherence.
Appropriate use of form, tone and register for purpose and audience. Varied vocabulary demonstrates some precision in word choice. Writing has clarity and is generally coherent. Textual organisation is clear and mostly relevant.
Some awareness of purpose for intended audience; some attempt at appropriateness in form, tone and register. Vocabulary is straightforward, occasionally chosen for effect. Writing is organised into paragraphs with some coherence.
Communication is at a basic level. Little awareness of purpose for intended audience; little awareness of form, tone and register. Vocabulary is basic; expression is unclear. Organisation is limited with minimal textual development.
The candidate has provided no response which is creditworthy.
Scoring Calibration
The following calibration guidance is included in the AI prompt. It instructs the AI on how to apply the mark scheme consistently, including how to differentiate between adjacent levels and how to use the full mark range within each level.
Scoring Calibration Guidance
Applying the Mark Scheme
- Holistic Assessment
- Read the response as a whole before awarding marks
- Match the response to the level descriptor that best fits
- Not every bullet point needs to be met exactly
- Look for the overall quality and impact
- Using the Full Mark Range
- Within each level, use the full range available
- Top of level: response exemplifies the descriptors
- Middle of level: response meets most descriptors adequately
- Bottom of level: response just meets the level threshold
- Two-Criterion Balance
- AO4 and AO5 are assessed separately
- A response may perform differently on each criterion
- Technical accuracy (AO5) does not limit content achievement (AO4)
Level Boundary Indicators
Level 5 vs Level 4 (AO4):
- Level 5: "perceptive", "subtle", "sophisticated", "compelling", "skilful"
- Level 4: "successful", "secure", "effective", "assured", "coherent"
- Key distinction: Level 5 shows exceptional sophistication and reader engagement
Level 4 vs Level 3 (AO4):
- Level 4: Consistently effective with assured structure
- Level 3: Appropriate but less distinctive; clarity but less flair
- Key distinction: Level 4 has polish and confidence; Level 3 is competent
Level 3 vs Level 2 (AO4):
- Level 3: Appropriate form/tone/register, varied vocabulary, clear organisation
- Level 2: Some awareness only, straightforward vocabulary, basic organisation
- Key distinction: Level 3 shows consistent competence; Level 2 is uneven
Level 5 vs Level 4 (AO5):
- Level 5: "extensive", "sophisticated", "rare errors", "strategic" vocabulary
- Level 4: "wide", "selective", "occasional errors", "range of" punctuation
- Key distinction: Level 5 has exceptional control with ambitious attempts
Technical Quality Guidance:
- Ambition is rewarded: attempted sophistication with minor errors > safe but limited
- Frequency of errors matters: "rare" (Level 5) vs "occasional" (Level 4) vs "some" (Level 3)
- Vocabulary range should match task demands - don't penalise appropriate simplicity
Feedback Approach
The AI is instructed to provide feedback in the style of an experienced Edexcel examiner. The following rules govern its feedback structure and style.
Feedback Structure Requirements
Per-Criterion Feedback (JSON Format)
For each criterion, provide:
- A score (AO4 out of 27, AO5 out of 18)
- 2-3 specific strengths with evidence from the essay
- 2-3 specific areas for improvement with examples
- A concise overall comment
Paragraph-Level Analysis
For each paragraph, provide:
- ao4_communication: Purpose, audience, form, tone, register, organisation
- ao5_accuracy: Vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structures
Include specific textual evidence for observations and actionable improvement suggestions.
Feedback Style Guidelines
Be Specific:
✓ "The imperative 'Consider the consequences' and rhetorical question 'Is this the future we want?' effectively persuade the reader" (Level 4-5)
✗ "Good persuasive techniques" (too vague)
Reference the Mark Scheme:
✓ "This demonstrates 'sophisticated use of form, tone and register' characteristic of Level 5"
✗ "Nice formal tone"
Suggest Improvements Constructively:
✓ "To secure Level 5, introduce more subtle cohesive devices—currently relies heavily on 'Firstly/Secondly/Finally'"
✓ "Expand vocabulary range: 'important' appears 6 times—consider 'significant', 'crucial', 'vital'"
✗ "Repetitive connectives"
Balance AO4 and AO5 Feedback:
- Address both communication effectiveness AND technical accuracy
- Don't let technical errors overshadow strong communication
- Highlight where ambitious vocabulary attempts show potential
Edexcel-Specific Feedback Notes
- AO4/AO5 Distinction
- AO4: Focus on PURPOSE, AUDIENCE, FORM, TONE, REGISTER, ORGANISATION

Writing Tips
Guidelines for generating high-impact writing tips
High-Impact Writing Tips
Generate 3-5 writing tips that would most improve this essay's score. Focus on changes that would meaningfully move the criterion scores.
Each tip should be:
- Score-impacting: Would an examiner give a higher score if the student made this change?
- Specific: Reference actual content from the essay
- Actionable: Tell the student exactly what to do
- Prioritised: Most impactful tip first
- Criterion-linked: Name which criterion the tip addresses (e.g., "To improve your Content: ..." or "This would boost your Coherence & Cohesion: ...")
Categories:
- content: Ideas, relevance, creativity, engagement
- language: Vocabulary, grammar, sentence variety
- structure: Organisation, paragraphing, coherence
- style: Tone, register, voice
Examples of good tips:
- "Strengthen your conclusion by restating your main argument — this would improve your Content as it currently ends abruptly"
- "The phrase 'very important' appears 4 times — vary with 'crucial', 'essential', or 'vital' to raise your Language and Style mark"
- "Add sensory details to bring your story to life — describe what characters see, hear, or feel to boost Content engagement"
- "Your argument lacks specific evidence — add examples or statistics to strengthen your Task Response"
What We Cannot Do
EssayHero is designed for formative feedback between drafts. It is not a replacement for human marking in summative assessment. The following limitations apply.
Cannot replicate Edexcel examiner training
Edexcel examiners undergo standardisation meetings and mark a set of sample scripts to ensure consistency. The AI has not been through this process and may not calibrate identically to a trained examiner.
Cannot assess handwriting
In the actual exam, candidates write by hand. EssayHero works with typed text only and cannot assess handwriting quality, legibility, or presentation. Students should also practise handwriting for exam conditions.
Cannot assess reading comprehension sections
EssayHero assesses the writing components only (Section B of each paper). Reading comprehension, summary, and directed writing responses that depend on a source text are not supported.
Cannot replace human marking for summative assessment
AI feedback is a complement to, not a substitute for, expert human judgement. It is best used as a formative tool during the revision process.
Scores are indicative, not definitive
Scores provide a useful benchmark for self-assessment and improvement but should not be treated as equivalent to a mark awarded by an Edexcel examiner.
